Gearing Up For NaNoWriMo - Join Me!

Today, I officially signed up for my month long flogging session... Also known as National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo).

In fact, I've dedicated a new page on my blog--it's on the menu above as 'Newton's NaNo 2014' and has all of the info YOU need to join me next month for some writer-ly camaraderie and goodies. I'll be giving out cheat-sheets, providing weekly "Writers Give Me Five" quickie motivation and craft videos, and probably a few FREEBIES here and there!

My first novel--direct result of 2008 NaNoWriMo!
I first participated in NaNoWriMo back in 2008, where I began my paranormal romance novel  "A Ghost of a Chance," which later was published by The Wild Rose Press (with a title change) as  "DESPITE THE GHOSTS." After that, I've participated several other years, with success in a novella, published in 2013 called ANY WITCH WAY, and in 2014 with my latest novel, DESPITE THE FANGS.

So, given that my NaNo projects have almost always resulted in a publishing contract, I'm obviously a big fan.

So, what is NaNoWriMo?
It's a FREE web challenge dedicated to getting writers in the habit of writing every single day of November, such that by month's end, you've written 50,000 words...or a small novel. For those of you non-Math majors, like me, that breaks down to writing around 1,667 words a day every single day of November.

Yep. Even Thanksgiving.

To help you along, I've created a Newton's NaNo page here and you can subscribe to my blog above, or my YouTube channel here, where I will be hosting "Writers Give Me Five"--short, <5 minute tips to get you through your novel in November.

NaNo will push you to your writer-ly limits...but in a good way. The best thing I get as a "WriMo" every year is a re-dedication to the BIC rule.

Don't know the BIC rule?
That's the most IMPORTANT rule as a writer: Keep your BIC--Butt in a Chair.

Yep. That's really all the writer-ly magic boils down to, right there.
Applying butt glue and persevering.

So join me, writers, and dedicate yourself to the BIC rule by signing up for National Novel Writing Month with me this November!! (We'll worry about our flattened rump in December.)

With my Butt in the Chair....I'll write my way to....
Happily My Ever After,

Dylan

Unless you didn't catch the multiple NaNoWriMo links in my above post, you can sign up for the November writing challenge by going here. It's free. And I guarantee if you complete the challenge, you'll be a better writer for it...not that my guarantee means a whole lot. That and $3.24 will get you a Dunkin' Donuts Chai Latte. Yummmm....

I hate Father's Day

Ok, maybe 'HATE' is a strong word. Father's Day is not my favorite holiday.

Given my three-fathered past, it's not hard to understand why. In fact, if it weren't for the fact my husband is an amazing Dad to our children, I'd ignore the freaking holiday altogether.

I never thought I had "Daddy" issues--not until doing an interview a year ago when the blogger asked me what themes repeated or carried over in all my novels. As I thought about the question, I was horrified to discover that fathers--or lack thereof--was an underlying theme for each of my heroines. In fact, I'd go so far as to say it was an underlying obstacle for each of them--one that flavored and shadowed their actions and reactions toward the hero of the story.

Took a couple glasses of wine to get over THAT self-actualization.

Before you think I had some monsters for fathers, let me set the record straight: I didn't. There are men out there--and I use the term 'men' very loosely--who drink, who belittle and hit their children and much, much worse. I had none of those.

My fathers weren't monsters. They just sucked at the basic job description of "Dad" and the 'forever' caveat that's supposed to go along with that.

I'll give you a quick run-down of my Father Figures. (I should draw a diagram, or a timeline, as it gets confusing):

Father #1 abandoned me within a year of my birth (never paying child support or helping my mother in any way), and I was led to believe Father #2 was the real deal until 6th grade, when I was introduced to Father #1. By high school, Father #2 abandoned me and my sister (and joined the dead-beat Dad population), while Father #1 took me on as an employee. By college, Father #3 entered the picture, Father #1 sort of lost interest in having a relationship with me (plus I no longer worked for him), and Father #2 was God-knows where doing God-knows what. And in my adulthood, Father #3 abandoned me and my sister (which, as we were adults, was not nearly as devastating as the others), rounding out the whole sordid picture.

Okay, put the damn tissues aside. It's all good.

There are many kids out there who have it much worse, I realize that. And before you comment on this post that I should reconcile with Father #1, #2, or #3, save your breath. I"m working through my father issues in my own way: through writing.

After that fated blog interview, I went through the novels I'd written to see exactly what my father-theme was for each of my heroines. (Bear with this psycho-analysis (pun intended)...I promise there's a point):

Book 1 (published, "Despite the Ghosts") :  abandonment, no knowledge of real father, and money/men/trust issues:
Heroine Nola had BOTH parents abandon her at birth, giving her to Nana Bee to raise. Reader discovers that the mother never named the birth father, and Nola will never know who he is. Nola has basic trust issues toward men (especially involving money) and finally learns to love and trust Parker.

Book 2 (published, "Any Witch Way") :  abandonment, no knowledge of real father issues:
While I can't reveal the details (without risking a spoiler), those that have read this novella will know Lily's curse has a direct relationship with her father, and parental abandonment features here, as well.

Book 3 (published, "Despite the Fangs") :  father missing from picture and trusting men issues:
In my most recent novel, my heroine (Aribella) lost her father when she was growing up. That loss geared her up to be the family's provider, as well as the Alpha, even though she is the youngest of the werewolf pack. Ari's issues are furthered by being left, literally, at the altar by her first human relationship. Her past drives her distrust of men--a fact that makes it difficult for her to trust (and love) hottie hero, Mason Gray.

But in literature, as in life, heroines (and authors) move on.
As my readers know, striving for the Happily Ever After is also a theme in all of my books, and this very
blog itself, so while you may be inclined to see my 'Daddy issues' as half empty, here's the half full part: I
managed to marry a man who is an amazing husband and one of the best fathers I know.

So this Father's Day, while I dislike it for my past, I love it for my children's future.

Happily my Ever After,
Dylan

Brothers and Sisters Day QUIZ

Me and my baby sister, Marleah @ 1975
Today is Brothers and Sisters Day. Sounds fake, but it's real. Even Ryan Seacrest posted about it with a Celebrity Brothers and Sisters quiz , so I thought I'd take some time to quiz you on some famous sibling authors and fictional brothers and sisters!

Brothers and Sisters in Fiction Quiz:

1. Name the three famous sisters that wrote novels in the 1800's under the male pseudonyms of Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell?

ANSWER: Charlotte Bronte, Emily Bronte and Anne Bronte, respectively. The three had varying degrees of success (Charlotte is most famous for "Jane Eyre"; Emily wrote the darkly Gothic novel, "Wuthering Heights" and Anne wrote "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall")

2. Can you name all four of the March sisters in Louisa May Alcott's novel about the bonds of family, "Little Women" (whose characters were loosely based on the author's own sisters)?

ANSWER: Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy March

3. Can you name all of the Weasley siblings in the "Harry Potter" series by J.K. Rowling in BIRTH ORDER?

ANSWER: Did I throw you off on the birth order thing? Ok, here's the answer in birth order: Bill (William), Charlie (Charles), Percy, Fred (although they are twins, Fred was born first), George, Ron (Ronald) and Ginny (Ginerva).

4. In my novel, DESPITE THE GHOSTS, total skeptic Parker Sebastian is troubled by the supposed suicide of his brother, whose spirit ends up contacting psychic Nola Richards for help solving the mystery surrounding his death. What is Parker's brother's name? HINT: Parker and his deceased brother share the same initials, P.S.

ANSWER: Parker's brother (now a spirit) is Paul Sebastian. You can watch the video trailer to see what message Paul leaves on Nola's shower door that starts the whole paranormal romance here.

5. What are the real names for the Brothers Grimm, responsible for many of the fairy tales we read today?

ANSWER: Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm, who were born and wrote their collected folk tales in Germany in 1812. You can thank them for popularizing Cinderella, Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretal as well as the version we know today of Little Red Riding Hood--a folk tale that my heroine in DESPITE THE FANGS has some issue with the re-telling (her werewolf family tells it verrrry differently!).

So how did you do on the Brothers and Sisters Day Quiz? Anything stump you? I confess I didn't know the names of the Grimm brothers, and I got the Weasley sibling order wrong...but I nailed the rest!

Be sure to follow my blog for more fun and quizzes as I...
Happily My Ever After,
Dylan

P.S. Did you see what the spirit wrote on Nola's shower door in my video here for my first book, DESPITE THE GHOSTS? One of the book's themes is brotherly love!

P.P.S. Want to read more on the interesting lives of the Bronte sisters? Check out this post on the BBC History site. And if you're a HARRY POTTER buff, check out this awesome family tree on the Weasley family and more here

How to Sell Yourself in a Query Letter...and not sound like a jerk

If you've been following my blog, you know that Friday is Writers Pay it Forward, and today I'm talking about How to Sell Yourself in a Query Letter (not your book, but yourself.

When I wrote my query letter for my first paranormal romance, DESPITE THE GHOSTS, I naively thought the Author Bio portion of the query letter would be a breeze. In fact, of the four parts to a query letter (See the Anatomy of a Query Letter here), I figured the brief writing bio would be the easiest. I was talking about myself. How hard could it be?

Really freaking hard, is the answer to that question.

I hated writing the Author Bio/Writing Credits part of the letter, and not just because I wasn't published at the time. I even hated it the second time with ANY WITCH WAY, after I'd been published already. And, surprise! When I wrote my query letter to my editor for my third novel, DESPITE THE FANGS, it was about as effortless as extracting an impacted tooth, and she knew both me and my writing!

It's tough to write about yourself and make it sound professional, yet not come off as a braggart. Or an idiot. So, in the spirit of  paying it forward, I'm going to give you my tips to Sell Yourself in a Query Letter, and below that, you can see my Author Bio/Writing Credits portion of all three of my novels (which all got a contract from The Wild Rose Press):

3 Ways to Sell Yourself in a Query Letter:

1. The Author Bio/Writing Credits paragraph, typically toward the end of your query letter, tells the agent/editor who you are as a writer, and what writing props and/or other skills that you possess. List any publication credits you have here, but list only the most relevant. TIP: If you have NO writing credits, don't apologize. Let your writing speak for itself and move on to Step 2.

2. List any writing groups you belong to, as it demonstrates your dedication to writing. For example, in my first novel, I had only my critique group to boast of (and yes, this is a good thing to mention, as it shows the agent/editor that you are serious enough to seek out feedback--a key quality in a good writer). In my second novel's query letter, I was a member of RWA as well as a VP of a writing organization. TIP: If you are NOT a member of a writing organization (in your genre, preferably!), sign up, for Pete's sake! If you ARE a member of a writing organization, you better get yourself involved. Write the newsletter, hold an office--anything to distinguish yourself above the rest of the saps in the slush pile!

3. Include any relevant life experience/hobbies as it relates to your expertise in writing that novel. The key word here is relelvant--I run marathons, scrapbook and have a Shiz Tsu, but none of that is relevant to any of my novels to date. However, if I were pitching a book featuring a marathon runner, scrapbooker-turned-serial-killer, or where a Shiz Tsu was the narrator, then it's relevant! TIP: If you do have a hobby/relevant life experience that relates to your novel, remember to use that to your advantage when you are published! If your heroine knits, hold a book signing in a knitting store, or create a blog that features your books, plus your knitting to appeal to both audiences.

And finally, here are my Author Bio/Writing Credits paragraphs from each of my query letters. They may not be perfect, but both my query letters landed me a publishing contract!

Author Bio/Writing Credits paragraph I used when I sold my first novel, DESPITE THE GHOSTS: (my transition sentence makes more sense when you read the whole query letter here)

Unlike Nola, my publishing credits are more mundane. They include a year-long stint with ClubMom.com as a Go-To writer, publishing a total of 22 “Stories from the Heart” and educational articles for their website. I have writing credits with several local newspapers, as well as training and sales materials created for corporate clients. I am an RWA member, as well as a member of Scribbler’s Ink, a Tampa-based writer’s group.

Author Bio/Writing Credits in my query letter that sold ANY WITCH WAY. While I sold it to The Wild Rose Press (same publisher as published DTG, my old editor was gone, so it was sort of like starting anew.
My most recent publishing credit is my debut novel, DESPITE THE GHOSTS, a paranormal romance published with The Wild Rose Press in 2009. My website, www.DylanNewton.com contains a blurb and excerpt of the novel, as well as current events to promote the book. As Vice President and Co-Founder of Sunshine State Romance Authors, a Florida chapter of Romance Writers of America, I believe in doing my homework and the Black Rose line at The Wild Rose Press would be the perfect home for my novella.
I hope this helps you on your query journey!

Happily My Ever After,
Dylan

Query Letters that Worked--mine for DESPITE THE GHOSTS

When I was deep in the throes of a query letter-induced nervous breakdown, I'd have given my left nostril to view an actual query letter that worked, along with the book it was written for--typically, you only get the former, without the latter.

Well, call me your Scary Godmother, but I've got mine for you. An actual query letter that worked, which you can then marry to DESPITE THE GHOSTS, my first book that was published.

:) You're welcome.

As part of my Writers Paying it Forward Friday program, here's the query letter that got me a partial request from 2 agents and 2 publishers--which went on to translate to a full request and contract from The Wild Rose Press in 2009. My query title is different than the title we ended up with when TWRP contracted me (as there was already another book with "Ghost of a Chance" as a title), which proves you should never fall in love with your title, because your title won't love you back!)

You'll note, the query for what would become DESPITE THE GHOSTS has all of the necessary parts that I talked about in my Anatomy of a Query Letter post (click here for that), and I stuck to all of the Top 10 Query Letter Do's and Don'ts post (click here for the Top Ten list).

(FYI--This was an email query, so is formatted for email with no return address, date sent, etc. The name of the editor has been made generic for the purposes of this post.)

Dear/Attn Ms. Agent:
Nola Richards is pissed. Not only did the ghost looming at the end of her bed interrupt what had the makings of an amazing erotic dream, he’s intent on ruining her summer with his fragmented plea for help. Really, despite her skills as a spirit medium, parapsychology professor and psychic author, what is she supposed to do with “NOT SUICIDE” written in the steam on her shower door?
When his ghostly antics scare off a paying client, it’s the last straw. Nola vows to solve this ghost’s mystery and insists on meeting with his bachelor brother, business tycoon and complete skeptic Parker Sebastian…and then bedding him. After having her first week of vacation ruined, her car stolen, and topping it off with her rough reception at Parker’s office, Nola figures breaking her two-year dry spell with the executive was her right. He owed her.
For Parker, stepping outside of reality never felt so good—neither had the sex. It was perfect…except for the fact that Nola had a hand in killing his brother. How else could he explain her otherworldly knowledge of his brother’s death?
Nola must overcome Parker’s disbelief to help unravel his brother’s message and discover the real killer. Both of them will have to alter their version of ‘normal’ to give their love A GHOST OF A CHANCE.
Complete at 85,000 words, A GHOST OF A CHANCE is an edgy paranormal romance with a quirky, modern heroine (endowed with the ability to see ghosts), a hot executive (who is just plain endowed), and plenty of conflict, ghostly suspense and sex.
I look forward to hearing from you.

I hope being able to see an actual query letter that resulted in a publishing contract (along with being able to read the resulting novel) helps you avoid a query letter-induced nervous breakdown.

And you didn't even have to give your left nostril to get it. Now that's what I call...

Happily My Ever After,
Dylan

Last Chance to be in the Drawing for a Character Named After You!

There are only a few days left in my February Prize-A-Palooza, as I will be drawing my last prize winners on  National Tooth Fairy Day (a.k.a. February 28).

What I am awarding on February 28?

  • One autographed copy of my paranormal romance, "Despite the Ghosts"
  • 20 autographed bookplates (a bookplate is a label  you can stick to the inside of your copy of my book, so that even if I don't have a signing in your area, you can have a signed copy!)
AND...I will be drawing ONE name from ALL of the people that have participated in my challenges this month to award the grand prize:

A CHARACTER NAMED AFTER YOU IN MY NEXT NOVEL!

This last, EASY challenge is about my new Author page on Amazon. Here's what you do:

  1. Go to my Amazon Author page at www.Amazon.com/author/dylannewton
  2. Check out my page, including the reader pictures I posted under my profile picture, my blog links, reviews, and upcoming events, etc. If you like it...
  3. Share my Author page to Facebook by clicking the Facebook "f" icon in the upper right.
  4. Tag me "Dylan Newton" or "Dylan Newton Author" once you've shared my Author page to Facebook...and that's it! Your name will be entered into the drawing for the above prizes! :)

But if you REALLY want to help me out (and have your name entered THREE TIMES):

  • Click "LIKE" on my Amazon Author page (in the upper right hand corner)*
  • Click on my book, "Despite the Ghosts" and click "LIKE"*
  • *You may have to sign in to your Amazon.com account to do this.

What is the deal with me and asking for LIKEs? Do I have some sort of self-esteem problem?
Well, yes, but that's a topic for another post.

The real reason behind the LIKEs is that's how Amazon 'ranks' authors and books they present to readers. In addition to sales, a increased amount of LIKEs gets my name and my book a better chance of appearing when a reader browses Amazon for...let's say paranormal romances. Or books with psychics, etc. The more  of a cult...erm, following, you have on Amazon, the higher your rank, which increases your likelihood to appear as a option for buyers...which will hopefully translate to more sales.

That's the theory, anyway. As most of you know, I'm late to the whole 'promote yourself' gig on social media, so time will tell.

But...I do appreciate any and all help you can give me! And who doesn't want some freebies just for helping a writer...and maybe get a character named after you for your trouble?!?

Good luck on the last Prize-A-Palooza Challenge!!
Happily My Ever After,
Dylan
