Gearing Up For NaNoWriMo - Join Me!
Today, I officially signed up for my month long flogging session... Also known as National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo).
In fact, I've dedicated a new page on my blog--it's on the menu above as 'Newton's NaNo 2014' and has all of the info YOU need to join me next month for some writer-ly camaraderie and goodies. I'll be giving out cheat-sheets, providing weekly "Writers Give Me Five" quickie motivation and craft videos, and probably a few FREEBIES here and there!
I first participated in NaNoWriMo back in 2008, where I began my paranormal romance novel "A Ghost of a Chance," which later was published by The Wild Rose Press (with a title change) as "DESPITE THE GHOSTS." After that, I've participated several other years, with success in a novella, published in 2013 called ANY WITCH WAY, and in 2014 with my latest novel, DESPITE THE FANGS.
So, given that my NaNo projects have almost always resulted in a publishing contract, I'm obviously a big fan.
So, what is NaNoWriMo?
It's a FREE web challenge dedicated to getting writers in the habit of writing every single day of November, such that by month's end, you've written 50,000 words...or a small novel. For those of you non-Math majors, like me, that breaks down to writing around 1,667 words a day every single day of November.
Yep. Even Thanksgiving.
To help you along, I've created a Newton's NaNo page here and you can subscribe to my blog above, or my YouTube channel here, where I will be hosting "Writers Give Me Five"--short, <5 minute tips to get you through your novel in November.
NaNo will push you to your writer-ly limits...but in a good way. The best thing I get as a "WriMo" every year is a re-dedication to the BIC rule.
Don't know the BIC rule?
That's the most IMPORTANT rule as a writer: Keep your BIC--Butt in a Chair.
So join me, writers, and dedicate yourself to the BIC rule by signing up for National Novel Writing Month with me this November!! (We'll worry about our flattened rump in December.)
With my Butt in the Chair....I'll write my way to....
Happily My Ever After,
Dylan
Unless you didn't catch the multiple NaNoWriMo links in my above post, you can sign up for the November writing challenge by going here. It's free. And I guarantee if you complete the challenge, you'll be a better writer for it...not that my guarantee means a whole lot. That and $3.24 will get you a Dunkin' Donuts Chai Latte. Yummmm....

I hate Father's Day
Ok, maybe 'HATE' is a strong word. Father's Day is not my favorite holiday.
Given my three-fathered past, it's not hard to understand why. In fact, if it weren't for the fact my husband is an amazing Dad to our children, I'd ignore the freaking holiday altogether.
I never thought I had "Daddy" issues--not until doing an interview a year ago when the blogger asked me what themes repeated or carried over in all my novels. As I thought about the question, I was horrified to discover that fathers--or lack thereof--was an underlying theme for each of my heroines. In fact, I'd go so far as to say it was an underlying obstacle for each of them--one that flavored and shadowed their actions and reactions toward the hero of the story.
Took a couple glasses of wine to get over THAT self-actualization.
Before you think I had some monsters for fathers, let me set the record straight: I didn't. There are men out there--and I use the term 'men' very loosely--who drink, who belittle and hit their children and much, much worse. I had none of those.
My fathers weren't monsters. They just sucked at the basic job description of "Dad" and the 'forever' caveat that's supposed to go along with that.
I'll give you a quick run-down of my Father Figures. (I should draw a diagram, or a timeline, as it gets confusing):
Father #1 abandoned me within a year of my birth (never paying child support or helping my mother in any way), and I was led to believe Father #2 was the real deal until 6th grade, when I was introduced to Father #1. By high school, Father #2 abandoned me and my sister (and joined the dead-beat Dad population), while Father #1 took me on as an employee. By college, Father #3 entered the picture, Father #1 sort of lost interest in having a relationship with me (plus I no longer worked for him), and Father #2 was God-knows where doing God-knows what. And in my adulthood, Father #3 abandoned me and my sister (which, as we were adults, was not nearly as devastating as the others), rounding out the whole sordid picture.
Okay, put the damn tissues aside. It's all good.
There are many kids out there who have it much worse, I realize that. And before you comment on this post that I should reconcile with Father #1, #2, or #3, save your breath. I"m working through my father issues in my own way: through writing.
After that fated blog interview, I went through the novels I'd written to see exactly what my father-theme was for each of my heroines. (Bear with this psycho-analysis (pun intended)...I promise there's a point):
Book 1 (published, "Despite the Ghosts") : abandonment, no knowledge of real father, and money/men/trust issues:
Heroine Nola had BOTH parents abandon her at birth, giving her to Nana Bee to raise. Reader discovers that the mother never named the birth father, and Nola will never know who he is. Nola has basic trust issues toward men (especially involving money) and finally learns to love and trust Parker.
Book 2 (published, "Any Witch Way") : abandonment, no knowledge of real father issues:
While I can't reveal the details (without risking a spoiler), those that have read this novella will know Lily's curse has a direct relationship with her father, and parental abandonment features here, as well.
Book 3 (published, "Despite the Fangs") : father missing from picture and trusting men issues:
In my most recent novel, my heroine (Aribella) lost her father when she was growing up. That loss geared her up to be the family's provider, as well as the Alpha, even though she is the youngest of the werewolf pack. Ari's issues are furthered by being left, literally, at the altar by her first human relationship. Her past drives her distrust of men--a fact that makes it difficult for her to trust (and love) hottie hero, Mason Gray.
But in literature, as in life, heroines (and authors) move on.
As my readers know, striving for the Happily Ever After is also a theme in all of my books, and this very
blog itself, so while you may be inclined to see my 'Daddy issues' as half empty, here's the half full part: I
managed to marry a man who is an amazing husband and one of the best fathers I know.
So this Father's Day, while I dislike it for my past, I love it for my children's future.
Happily my Ever After,
Dylan

Bring Back May Day!
![]() |
May Day Photo from Library of Congress |
It was like Ding-Dong-Ditch, but with a much happier ending.
And we'd do the May Pole dance. Erm, except in my class, they'd give you crepe paper instead of ribbons to wind around the flagpole, and when you're in your snow-boots instead of frilly dresses, it sort of loses something. But still. We celebrated the coming of summer, and that's the point.
In all my years as a mom of elementary kids, there has been nary a single May Day basket. No tromping around a May Pole. No random gifts of flowers to friends or neighbors.
I can't help feeling like we've lost something.
I wonder if it's because the origin of May Day points to the Celtic festival of Beltane (or Gaelic, Beltaine) where the cattle were driven by hand-lit bonfires to mark the return of the sun and promote health and fertility--a custom that is still observed in Ireland.
In Wicca, Beltane is one of the Major Sabbats, or holidays, and is the opposite on the calendar wheel to Samhain. Where Beltane signals the beginning of the growing cycle of the year, Samhain signals the end, and as such, the veils between the worlds are said to be thinnest at these times of great change.

Joshua and Lily's story on the opposite--the growing and fertile--side of the year. It's said on Beltane, you can see fairies, and if you washed your face with morning dew on Beltane, you'd be gifted with beauty. And with all of the Celtic and pagan tradition behind Beltane, I think it would make a lovely follow-up.
Now I've just got to get my writing muse to agree!
Happy May Day. Blessed Beltane. And...
Happily My Ever After,
Dylan

WITCHIN' Book Party Giveaway: Test your Witch knowledge for a chance to win!

As my newest book deals with a WITCH, let's test your WITCH-y knowledge.

Take my 5 Question WITCH TEST ...then enter my WITCHIN' DRAWING to win 1 of 5 signed copies of ANY WITCH WAY, sent free to your door (US only), plus a little surprise...
1. YOU may be a WITCH...Do any of the following apply to you?
A. Are you female?
B. Do you live alone?
C. Do you own any pets (especially cats or dogs)
D. Have you ever argued with your neighbor?
E. Do you have any moles on your body?
2. Followers of what religion might refer to themselves as 'witches'?
A. Christianity
B. Wicca
C. Muslim
ANSWER: B--Wicca. Wicca is a religion based, in part, on ancient, northern European Pagan beliefs in a fertility Goddess and her consort, a horned God. My heroine, Lily, in ANY WITCH WAY, found out many of the notions she had about witches were wrong...lucky for her, she had an ancient, sexy hero for a tutor! Click here to see my book trailer in a new window.
3. TRUE/FALSE:
The super sexy ritual "The Five-Fold Kiss" that appears in your book isn't a real thing in Wicca. You made it up to create a steamy love scene!
ANSWER: False.
The Five Fold Kiss ritual does exist..but in practise, it's not as...sexy as in ANY WITCH WAY. It's more of a dedication ritual, and conducted with more pure intentions. Discovering the ritual during my research, I absolutely KNEW it would have to be a love scene in my novel--and so I took the real ritual and...well, steamed it up some. ;)
4. A male witch is called a:
A. Sorcerer
B. Warlock
C. Witch
ANSWER: C--Witch. The term 'warlock' is an insult from its original definition as "oath breaker."
5. If a Wiccan performs magick to harm someone else (like a curse), what are the consequences?
A. Since Wiccans are taught to do no wrong, they believe their evil curse will come back on them threefold.
B. They get beheaded by their Goddess.
C. Nothing. A Wiccan can use spells for good or evil without consequence.
ANSWER: A--The curse will rebound on them threefold. My ancient hero, Joshua, was cursed because of an impulsive, ill-intended spell he cast. Part of his penance involves righting that wrong with Lily, who suffers from something far darker than a curse. Click here for my WICCAN-LY good book trailer!
How'd you do? Post a comment below and be one of my winners for a brand, spanking new copy of ANY WITCH WAY, autographed and sent to you (US shipping only) with one of these adorable pens!

How to Sell Yourself in a Query Letter...and not sound like a jerk
If you've been following my blog, you know that Friday is Writers Pay it Forward, and today I'm talking about How to Sell Yourself in a Query Letter (not your book, but yourself) .
When I wrote my query letter for my first paranormal romance, DESPITE THE GHOSTS, I naively thought the Author Bio portion of the query letter would be a breeze. In fact, of the four parts to a query letter (See the Anatomy of a Query Letter here), I figured the brief writing bio would be the easiest. I was talking about myself. How hard could it be?
Really freaking hard, is the answer to that question.
I hated writing the Author Bio/Writing Credits part of the letter, and not just because I wasn't published at the time. I even hated it the second time with ANY WITCH WAY, after I'd been published already. And, surprise! When I wrote my query letter to my editor for my third novel, DESPITE THE FANGS, it was about as effortless as extracting an impacted tooth, and she knew both me and my writing!
It's tough to write about yourself and make it sound professional, yet not come off as a braggart. Or an idiot. So, in the spirit of paying it forward, I'm going to give you my tips to Sell Yourself in a Query Letter, and below that, you can see my Author Bio/Writing Credits portion of all three of my novels (which all got a contract from The Wild Rose Press):
2. List any writing groups you belong to, as it demonstrates your dedication to writing. For example, in my first novel, I had only my critique group to boast of (and yes, this is a good thing to mention, as it shows the agent/editor that you are serious enough to seek out feedback--a key quality in a good writer). In my second novel's query letter, I was a member of RWA as well as a VP of a writing organization. TIP: If you are NOT a member of a writing organization (in your genre, preferably!), sign up, for Pete's sake! If you ARE a member of a writing organization, you better get yourself involved. Write the newsletter, hold an office--anything to distinguish yourself above the rest of the saps in the slush pile!
3. Include any relevant life experience/hobbies as it relates to your expertise in writing that novel. The key word here is relelvant--I run marathons, scrapbook and have a Shiz Tsu, but none of that is relevant to any of my novels to date. However, if I were pitching a book featuring a marathon runner, scrapbooker-turned-serial-killer, or where a Shiz Tsu was the narrator, then it's relevant! TIP: If you do have a hobby/relevant life experience that relates to your novel, remember to use that to your advantage when you are published! If your heroine knits, hold a book signing in a knitting store, or create a blog that features your books, plus your knitting to appeal to both audiences.
And finally, here are my Author Bio/Writing Credits paragraphs from each of my query letters. They may not be perfect, but both my query letters landed me a publishing contract!

3 Ways to Sell Yourself in a Query Letter:
1. The Author Bio/Writing Credits paragraph, typically toward the end of your query letter, tells the agent/editor who you are as a writer, and what writing props and/or other skills that you possess. List any publication credits you have here, but list only the most relevant. TIP: If you have NO writing credits, don't apologize. Let your writing speak for itself and move on to Step 2.2.
Unlike Nola, my publishing credits are more mundane. They include a year-long stint with ClubMom.com as a Go-To writer, publishing a total of 22 “Stories from the Heart” and educational articles for their website. I have writing credits with several local newspapers, as well as training and sales materials created for corporate clients. I am an RWA member, as well as a member of Scribbler’s Ink, a Tampa-based writer’s group.

My most recent publishing credit is my debut novel, DESPITE THE GHOSTS, a paranormal romance published with The Wild Rose Press in 2009. My website, www.DylanNewton.com contains a blurb and excerpt of the novel, as well as current events to promote the book. As Vice President and Co-Founder of Sunshine State Romance Authors, a Florida chapter of Romance Writers of America, I believe in doing my homework and the Black Rose line at The Wild Rose Press would be the perfect home for my novella.
I hope this helps you on your query journey!

How Book Covers are Made
I'm thrilled that my book cover for ANY WITCH WAY just made it as a finalist in the EPIC Awards! Why? Well, here's what most people don't realize...
AUTHORS HAVE VERY LITTLE SAY ON THEIR BOOK COVERS!
When time came to submit my very first "Manuscript Information Sheet" for my first novel, DESPITE THE GHOSTS, I was shocked to discover this was the only information the cover artist would see when making my cover. This one-pager, fill-in-the-blank-style sheet was the only detail I got to provide for what would be the face of my novel forever!
"What?!" I gasped to my editor, "They aren't required to, like, READ my book first?"
"Nope," my editor said, then followed with some very true words, "The writer's job is to write the novel. Our job, along with the cover artist, is to sell it. And we know what sells."
Since my first novel's cover got such great reviews, I've learned to trust the system. But, when it came time to submit the manuscript info sheet for ANY WITCH WAY, I was very specific. Here's what I asked for on my one-pager that was sent to The Wild Rose Press cover artist assigned to me:
Thank God the cover artist (the incredible Rae Monet) ignored most of what I asked for!
So, while my hero isn't on my cover, you can't see all of my heroine and there is a big, ghostly pentagram
smack in the middle of the book...it was perfect! So far, it has finaled in two contests, and I've had reviews by readers who ONLY picked up the book because it had the pentagram on the front.
Go figure.
And now, I await my cover for my third novel, DESPITE THE FANGS. And I gave detailed instructions. Which I hope they ignore. :)
Happily My Ever After,
Dylan

- heroine had long dark hair, blue eyes, dressed in contemporary clothes.
- I described in full detail my Wiccan hero, Joshua, going so far as to paste links to Sully Erna and Josh Groban (The two guys that inspired my hero--and yes, I realize how very different the singers are, musically speaking. I've got elclectic tastes.) and had envisioned him in a black, hooded robe as he wears in the restaurant scene (before performing the delectable "Five Fold Kiss" on Lily).
- Setting in a forest of bare/autumn-like trees, filtered by moonlight
- Asked if something funky and Wiccan-like could be done with the title.
- Asked NOT to put a pentagram on the cover, as it might turn-off potential readers.

Thank God the cover artist (the incredible Rae Monet) ignored most of what I asked for!

Creating a Paranormal Hero
Q: What do you get when you cross Josh Groban with Godsmack's lead singer, Sully Erna?
Answer: The hero for my novella, ANY WITCH WAY, due out later this year from The Wild Rose Press.
I am a visual writer, so I post pictures of my hero/heroine for inspiration. I also write to music, and this novella came to fruition after I'd attended two very different concerts--both with singers that fascinate my muse: Josh Groban and Sully Erna.
There's something about Josh Groban, the young singer with the voice like audible velvet, that screams 'tortured hero' to me. It's the combination of his liquid chocolate eyes, with that puppy-dog like slant at the outer edge, his shaggy hair, and that full-lipped smile--he has the look of fallen innocence.
And then there's Godsmack's lead singer, Sully Erna. Just the name, Sully, evokes an image of the reformed bad boy hero. And when you look at his music videos, Sully is like sin walking. And I mean that in a thigh-shaking-ly good way. With his tattoos, bedroom eyes and rock-mussed hair, combined with his incredible voice and song lyrics--Sully represents the mysterious and evocative.
Combine fallen innocence with the mysterious and evocative and you have:
Yummmm.
I recently did my best to meld Sully/Groban into one paragraph for my publisher's graphic artist--a daunting task when all that artist will see to create your cover is those few sentences. I'm waiting with baited breath for my novella's cover art to be returned from the graphic artist.
Maybe he or she is Godsmack/Groban fan as well??
Keeping my fingers crossed...as I
Happily My Ever After,
Dylan

Godsmack's videos are here. My fav is "I Stand Alone" because the song rocks...and The Rock is in it!
Click through Josh Groban's website to see him sing. No, really. He's amazing.
